The pond, in 3D

The drawing, as a place. The water is a surface that ripples on its own; the lanterns are lit paper on it, each on its own ring, one out past the last. By night the candles are the only light. The camera starts where the drawing was made from.

How it is made

  • The lanterns are one model, textured in the same hand as the drawing, placed where the drawing placed them. Each gives its own light and sits in a small ripple of its own.
  • The water is not a picture. The page draws it as it moves: pencil rings on paper, the same blue, the same hand-wobble, lifting a little with each ring.
  • By night the water goes dark and glossy and the candles do all the lighting: each one falls off with distance the way a real flame does, carries across the water, and blooms a little, as a flame does to a camera. By day it is the drawing on paper, with soft shadows under the lanterns.
  • The one out past the last ring goes a little further out and comes back, on its own time, the way it does on the home page.
  • Anyone who asks their system for less motion gets the pond held still, and loses nothing.

The model

The lantern, as a file, for anyone building with it. Keep it on paper, keep it lit, and keep it the same size as the others.
