Living apart 2 min read
Calling home kept becoming next weekend.
I thought about home every day. Somehow, an ordinary call was still easy to postpone.

By the time my day slowed down, theirs was nearly over.
Moving away changed the smallest things first. I could no longer ask how the day had gone while someone was making tea. A conversation with home needed a little planning. By the time my day slowed down, theirs was nearly over.
I would think of calling on Saturday, get caught up in errands, and remember again on Sunday night. We were in touch in the family group, so there was always a reason to believe a proper conversation could wait. But a photo of dinner didn't tell me much about how my dad's week had actually been.
I added my parents to Relationshipss with a weekly rhythm. We had already talked about which part of the weekend usually worked. The app didn't know their time zone or choose that window for us. It gave me a reminder to make the arrangement while there was still time.
When they appeared in Today, I opened our usual chat and asked whether the next afternoon suited them. After the call, I recorded it. If we happened to talk midweek, I recorded that too, so the reminder followed the conversation we had actually had.
Not every call needs to be long. Sometimes there is very little news, and we talk about the neighbours or what to cook. That is the part I missed when I was waiting to have something worth reporting. I still miss windows, and we still disagree sometimes. Remembering to make space for a call is just one piece I can take responsibility for.
Where Relationshipss fits
Choose a reminder rhythm for family and record actual catch-ups. Use the reminder as a prompt to arrange a call through the channel your family already uses.
Time-zone coordination and expectations about contact are agreed between people. The app cannot resolve family conflict or decide how often anyone owes a call.
Who have you been meaning to call?
Choose a few people and a rhythm that works for you. Keep the conversation in the calls, messages and meetups you already enjoy.
